This pumpkin seed smoothie is super creamy and delicious. It's the perfect fall smoothie with pumpkin pie spice and pumpkin puree!

I've been making smoothies for over 10 years; I like it when they are creamy and thick and this checks both those boxes!

Ingredients

Here are the simple ingredients you will need to make this smoothie.

Smoothie ingredients including frozen banana, and pumpkin seeds on a autumn brown cloth.
  • Pumpkin seeds: Pumpkin seeds are a great source of protein and zinc. Look for good quality, unsalted, raw pumpkin seeds for the best nutritional benefits.
  • Pumpkin puree: I use canned pumpkin puree, however, a freshly baked chunk of pumpkin or sweet potato would also work!
  • Pumpkin pie spice: This is a mixture of warm spices (what is used in a PSL). If you don't have any, you can easily make some with five spices OR use cinnamon instead!
  • Frozen banana: Bananas make this smoothie creamy and thick. Using a fresh banana can work, however, it will not be a thick smoothie, I recommend adding 4-5 ice cubes to make it cold.
  • Milk: Only a little milk is needed for this smoothie. You can use whatever milk you like to use (cow milk, soy milk, oat milk, coconut milk, cashew milk). I like to use unsweetened almond milk.
  • Maca: This is a root vegetable that looks like a turnip and grows in South America. It can be found as a powder in health food stores in North America. Classified as an adaptogen, maca helps the body adapt to stress and restore balance. It is well known for supporting women's hormones.

See recipe card for quantities.

Danika's nutrition insight: Pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin seeds are high in protein (3 grams per 2 tablespoons), rich in omega-3s, and magnesium. They contain lignans which support hormone balance, reduce inflammation and encourage healthy estrogen levels during the first half of the female cycle.

I love making recipes to fit into my female cycle. This smoothie is perfect to have during the menstrual or follicular phase to support the female hormones. If you like seed cycling, next try my pumpkin seed granola bars.

Equipment

  • 1 high power blender

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons pumpkin seeds
  • ¼ cup pumpkin puree or cooked sweet potato
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice here's my recipe to make your own
  • 1 cup any kind of milk
  • 1 tablespoon maca powder optional
  • 4 frozen bananas
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup optional

Instructions

  • Place the pumpkin pie spice, the pumpkin puree, the pumpkin seeds, milk, and maca (if using) into the bender. Break the frozen bananas into pieces and place them in the blender too.
  • Start the blender on low and turn to high speed for 30 seconds to 1 minute until it’s thick and there are no banana chunks. Taste and add maple syrup if desired. Pour into glasses and enjoy.

Notes

Frozen bananas: The sweetness of bananas can differ depending on how ripe they are. If they are more on the green side they will be less sweet, if the bananas have brown spots or are more ripe they are sweeter. This changes the flavour of the smoothie which may result in adding maple syrup!
Make it a green smoothie: Throw a handful of spinach or kale in to increase the nutrient density of this smoothie! Or add 1 teaspoon of spirulina.
To increase the protein, add your favorite protein powder.
Optional: Add a teaspoon of chia seeds for more fiber. Chia seeds are known to provide energy!
