Chocolate Orange Truffles

I designed these chocolate orange truffles to be simple, quick, wholesome - yet decadent. This recipe does not dip the truffles in chocolate because that's too time-consuming; I found they are perfectly sweet with a simple melted chocolate chip drizzle and fresh orange zest on top!

As a mom of three, I am looking for more fun holiday treats that don't have heaps of sugar. I also don't have time to make long, detailed recipes; this is no different - only 25 minutes. We use an orange - the zest and juice for fresh REAL orange flavoring, and chocolate chips to make a ganache because every mom has those in her house!

I designed this recipe to be a part of an edible advent calendar, filled with homemade bliss balls and pretty energy balls that we made extra special with a drizzle of chocolate for the holiday season.

With melted coconut oil and chocolate chips, there is no heavy cream or butter in these truffles. I use almond flour to thicken them. It's not a traditional truffle but a homemade simple treat I feel good about giving my kids at Christmas, just like my bliss balls with fresh ginger.

The other recipes I used for my kids' advent calendar were pistachio date balls, these easy homemade coconut macaroons, my green matcha balls dipped in white chocolate, and these chocolate raspberry bites.

Ingredients needed

A cutting board with chocolate chips, a orange, coconut oil, and almond flour for making truffles.
  • Fresh orange: For ultimate orange flavor, a real orange zested is key! No orange extract is needed in this recipe; we juice the orange and use the fresh juice.
  • Chocolate chips: For this recipe, I used semi-sweet chocolate chips. I personally think milk chocolate chips would be too sweet for this recipe, but I think dark chocolate chips would be perfect. This is very much a personal preference; any chocolate chips or baker's chocolate will work.
  • Almond flour: I like that almond flour adds a bit of protein to these truffles. I get my almond flour from Costco because I find it is the most affordable.

Dairy-Free Orange Truffles

To make these dairy free, use dark chocolate chips or chocolate chips without dairy; I like the Enjoy Life brand.

How To Make Chocolate Orange Truffles

Come to my kitchen and make these orange truffles with me! If you want the ingredient quantities, scroll to the recipe below.

Chocolate chips and coconut oil in a metal pot.

Step 1: Melt the chocolate chips and the coconut oil in a medium pot over low heat. This can also be done in the microwave.

An orange on a metal zester over a bowl.

Step 2: Wash your orange, then remove the bright orange layer with a micro-blade or a small grater. Set the zest aside. Cut the orange in half. Squeeze the orange into a measuring cup to collect all the juice.

Step 3: Add 2 tablespoons of fresh orange juice, and almost all of the zest to the liquid chocolate, as well as the almond flour.

Step 4: Stir everything together until a dough forms.

Step 5: Using a tablespoon, scoop dough balls, and roll them into balls.

Step 6: Melt chocolate chips, let the chocolate cool slightly. When the chocolate is not too hot, place it in a ziploc bag. Cut a tiny hole in the corner of the ziploc bag to drizzle over the truffles (or use a spoon to drizzle it over the truffles). Lastly, sprinkle with the rest of the orange zest.

Danika's Top Tips For Melting Chocolate

Melt the chocolate chips slowly. Use a pot with a thick bottom. Know your stove! How quickly does it heat up?

After many years of cooking at my parents' house over an electric stove, I have found my present gas stove to be the easiest to control the temperature I want - which is perfect for melting chocolate.

Sometimes electric stoves can be finicky and can heat up too fast when you are not expecting it and make the chocolate seize (aka harder). Don't walk away if you have an electric stove but stay in front of the stove constantly stirring. As soon as everything is melted, remove the pot from the stove.

Alternatively, you can melt chocolate on low in the microwave. Stop and stir the chocolate every 30 seconds so it does not burn.

Gifting Truffles

Truffles are the perfect homemade food gifts for teachers, besties, and family members! Wrap truffles in some cellophane and tie them with a ribbon. Or place them in a little box and fasten it with a ribbon. Keep these presents in the fridge or a cold room until gifting them.

For other homemade gifts, I recommend homemade vanilla, a jar of granola with seeds, or a batch of cinnamon cookies!

Equipment

  • 1 medium pot
  • 1 Cookie Sheet
  • parchment paper or a silicone mat

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 ¼ cups almond flour
  • 1 orange zest and 2 tablespoons juice

Chocolate Drizzle

  • ⅓ cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  • In a medium pot, melt the coconut oil and 1 cup of chocolate chips over low heat, stiring the whole time. This can also be done in a medium bowl in the microwave; stir every 30 seconds if you are melting in the microwave.
Once the coconut oil and chocolate chips are fully melted, remove from heat.
  • Chocolate can seize easily if it gets too hot, so you need to slowly heat it up, or else it will harden.
  • Remove all the zest from your orange and set it aside. Then cut and squeeze the juice from the orange.
Stir in almost all of the orange zest into the melted chocolate; just leave a little bit to sprinkle on top of the truffles at the end. Then add 2 tablespoons of fresh orange juice and almond flour. Stir until you get a thick dough.
  • If the dough is too hot, set aside for 5 minutes until it's cool enough to touch. Then, using a tablespoon, scoop the dough and roll into balls; place on a parchment-covered cookie sheet.
  • Let the balls sit in the fridge for 10 to 20 minutes to fully cool and solidify. Melt ⅓ cup of chocolate chips. Drizzle the chocolate over the balls, then sprinkle with the rest of the orange zest on top.
  • I used a ziploc bag to drizzle chocolate. I let the melted chocolate cool slightly, then put it into the bag and cut a tiny hole in the corner to drizzle chocolate out of it. If the chocolate is too thick, add ½ teaspoon of coconut oil.

Notes

I find it easy on my gas stove to melt chocolate because I can control the temperature well, but if you have an electric stove, it may be harder to control the temperature. Another thing I like to do it use a pot with a thick bottom to prevent the chocolate from burning.
Decorate: I love making these pretty with orange zest, however chunky sea salt or chocolate sprinkles can make orange truffles pop in prettiness too!
Store the truffles in the fridge for 3 weeks or in the freezer up to 3 months.
