When I was a kid, I remember my mom doubling a batch of soft chewy granola, sweetened with honey, and I would love to eat the granola warm from the oven with cold milk!

This recipe is my version of that childhood memory. I've added hemp hearts and almonds to make this granola higher in protein for a good start to the day. If you aren't a fan of crunchy granola (like my husband), you will love this hemp granola recipe!

Now my son asks to bring clusters of this in his lunchbox to school! So I can confirm this is kid-approved granola.

Labelled ingredients in measuring cups and bowls including almonds, whole wheat flour, oil, hemp hearts, honey, rolled oils, water.

I also like to add sea salt to my recipe. I think salty granola tastes incredible, it is not in my ingredient photo.

Nutrition insights from Danika

In my blog posts, I like to share a little insight from my schooling in holistic nutrition. Let's chat about this hemp heart granola.

High in fiber: The oats, seeds, and nuts provide wholesome fibers supporting the digestive tract, detoxification, and regulating blood sugar levels.

Good source of healthy fats and protein: Hemp hearts and almonds are great healthy fats which support brain health and skin, as well as being a source of long-lasting energy.

Let me show you how to make hemp granola

Oats, flour, hemp hearts, and almonds in a mixing bowl.

Step 1: In a large mixing bowl ,place the rolled oats, hemp hearts, chopped almonds, and flour. Stir together with a big wooden spoon.

All the wet granola mixture stirred together.

Step 2: I use a large glass measuring cup to mix together the honey, oil, and water, then pour this into the large bowl and mix everything together until well-mixed.

A sheet pan of granola pressed down.

Step 3: On a large cookie sheet, spread out the granola and press it into the pan.

Clumps of granola being broken up.

Step 4: Bake this granola at a low temperature for about an hour, so it stays soft and chewy, and the nutrition in the nuts and seeds is still present. Cool and break into pieces!

Hemp Heart Granola

Super soft and chewy, this hemp granola is like chunks of healthy cookies for breakfast! They are high in protein from the whole-wheat flour, almonds, and hemp hearts. I hope you love this as much as my family does!

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 6 cups rolled oats
  • 1 ½ cups chopped almonds
  • ¾ cup hemp hearts
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt or more to preference

Wet Ingredients

  • ½ cup water
  • 1 cup oil note below
  • 1 cup honey

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 250 Fahrenhiet (120 C). In a large bowl, place the whole-wheat flour, rolled oats, chopped almonds, and hemp hearts. Stir together until everything is well-mixed.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the water, oil, and honey, then pour it over the oat mixture and stir until everything is combined. Spread the mix onto a large cookie sheet and press the granola into the corners.
  • Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes until it smells fragrant, and the oats start to turn golden. Let the mix cool in the pan and then break the granola into large chunks. Store in a sealed bag or container and eat within 1 month.

Notes

This does make a pretty good-sized amount, so if you have a small family, I recommend cutting the recipe in half.
I am pretty general with my measuring with this granola; it's very forgiving if you want to add more almonds or less honey.
Oil: I use melted coconut oil if I want a sweeter, fruity flavor. I use olive oil if I'm too lazy to melt coconut oil, and I'm okay with a more nutty flavor. Melted butter would work fine too!
