Ingredients and Substitutions

7 whole food ingredients are needed to make this healthy celery pineapple smoothie.

Apple, celery, mint, lemon juice, spinach. frozen pineapple on a plate: the ingredients for a celery smoothie.
The coconut water needed is not shown.
  • Pineapple: Use frozen pineapple to make this smoothie cold and refreshing. Fresh pineapple can also be used, just add 1 cup of ice to make it thick and cold.
  • Celery: The taste of celery can differ depending on how fresh it is, how fast it is grown, and if you use the outer darker green stalks (they can be stronger tasting), or the inner light green stalks (they are more mild). Start with 1 celery stalk and add 1-2 more depending on your taste preference.
  • Apple: Choose a sweet apple to add a robust flavor to this smoothie.
  • Spinach or Kale: Greens increase the nutrient density of this smoothie, spinach is slightly milder than kale and you will not taste it.
  • Lemon Juice: Adding a little lemon brings a burst of flavor making this a super refreshing drink.
  • Mint: I use fresh mint in this recipe, just a little handful will do! If you don't have fresh mint you can leave it out.
  • Coconut Water or Water: I've made this smoothie with both coconut water and just water, either is fine. Coconut water contains high-quality minerals specifically helping with electrolytes.

See the recipe card down below for quantities.

Pineapple: Nutritional Insight

Pineapple is a great source of the bromelain enzyme. This is an anti-inflammatory enzyme that supports the digestion of starch in protein, as well as microbes, disease, cells, and intestinal parasites.

It has small amounts of vitamins A, and C, unlike other fruits. It is high in manganese.

This information comes from Prescription for Dietary Wellness by Phyllis A. Balch and The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia by Rebecca Wood.

Top Tips for the Best Celery Pineapple Smoothie

High-Speed Blender: Use a blender with a lot of speed and power to pulse everything into a creamy liquid, no one wants stringy celery!

Layering the Ingredients: Placing the soft food on the bottom, then adding the frozen pineapple supports the blender blade, and makes it so you need less liquid to blend this well.

Use Frozen Pineapple: The cold pineapple makes this smoothie a thicker texture, and being cold makes it so refreshing!

Add more celery: Start with one stalk of celery, blend, then taste. Add more as desired. Some celery can taste more intense (darker green will be stronger) than others, so it's better to start with one stalk and add 1 or 2 more slowly.

Green Smoothie Add In's

Here are a few ways you can change this recipe to boost goodness to support your nutritional needs:

  • Protein Boost: Add 1 tablespoon of protein powder or 1 tablespoon of hemp hearts.
  • Energy Boost: Add 2 teaspoon of chia seeds
  • Anti-Inflammatory: Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric as this has incredible anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Sweeter Please!: Add 1-2 tablespoons of honey depending on your desired sweetness.

FAQ

Can I use celery leaves in my smoothie?

Yes, celery leaves are edible and can be used in a smoothie! Fun fact, celery is a relative of parsley which does have a similar flat leaf, but it doesn't taste like it.

What are the health benefits of a celery smoothie?

Celery smoothies are beneficial to your overall well-being. It is hydrating (because of its high water content), an antioxidant, reduces inflammation, a great source of minerals and vitamins (calcium, iron, magnesium, vitamin C, B6, K), lowers blood pressure, has detoxing properties, balances acidity in the body, and supports good skin.

When celery is mixed with other fresh produce in a smoothie it increases the variety of minerals and vitamins the body receives this helps the body decrease any nutritional gaps the body has.

This information is taken from Prescription for Dietary Wellness by Phyllis A. Balch.

What goes well with celery in a smoothie?

When making a smoothie with celery here are some ingredients that go well: apples, pears, lemon juice, lime juice, fresh ginger, coconut, leafy greens, berries, tropical fruit or pineapple juice, cucumber juice, fresh orange juice, almond milk.

Can you still eat limp celery?

Limp celery is often just dehydrated. Try giving it a bath in cold water (10-30 minutes) and see it become more crisp. If there are no other signs of spoilage (other than being limp) this celery is fine to eat.

To prevent celery from going limp, store cut celery stalks in a jar or container covered in water and place in the fridge. For celery to last 4 weeks or longer wrap it in tin foil and store it in the fridge, this traps the moisture inside keeping it crispy.
