Love This Recipe Because It's:
- Loaded with pineapple: The celery and pineapple together are such a good flavor combo! If you love pineapple, be sure to try my protein pineapple smoothie and this pineapple carrot muffin recipe.
- Delicious: Celery can have a distinctly strong taste; however, this smoothie has a good balance of pineapple, tangy celery, and apple, with a pretty green color from the greens (spinach or kale). Fresh mint brings this to the next level, just like my healthy mango slushie!
- Naturally sweet: With an apple and pineapple, this green drink needs no sweetener; it's perfect the way it is, just like this smoothie with spinach and fruit!
- Nutritious: You will need 7 simple whole-food ingredients to make this celery pineapple smoothie. This smoothie is very hydrating, specifically from the coconut water!
- Without banana: This pineapple smoothie is made without any banana, so if you dislike bananas or don't have any bananas, this is great for you, along with my blackberry smoothie without banana!

Ingredients and Substitutions

- Pineapple: Use frozen pineapple to make this smoothie cold and refreshing. Fresh pineapple can also be used, but be sure to add 1 cup of ice to make it thick and cold.
- Celery: The taste of celery can differ depending on how fresh it is, how fast it is grown, and if you use the outer, darker green stalks (stronger flavor), or the inner light green stalks (milder flavor). Start with 1 celery stalk and add 1-2 more depending on your taste preference. Buy organic celery as it is one of the most sprayed vegetables.
- Spinach or Kale: Greens increase the nutrient density of this smoothie. If you are worried about the taste, spinach is slightly milder than kale, and you will not taste it (if you are trying to sneak it to your kids like me!).
- Mint: I use fresh mint in this recipe, just a little handful will do! If you don't have fresh mint, you can leave it out. Do not use dried mint, as it changes the taste too much.
- Coconut Water or Water: I've made this smoothie with both coconut water and just water; either is fine. Coconut water is naturally rich in high-quality minerals and electrolytes like potassium. Look for coconut water with the only ingredient being coconut water and not other added ingredients like sugar! My other favorite refreshing drink with coconut water is this mango slushie recipe.

How to Make a Pineapple Celery Smoothie
Follow these step-by-step photos from my kitchen to make your very own celery smoothie. It's so simple to make.

Step 1: Place 1 celery stalk, a chopped apple, spinach, lemon juice, and mint in the blender. Then add 1 cup of water or coconut water, and chia seeds if using. Place the pineapple on top.

Step 2: Blend! Taste, and add more celery as desired.
Once all the ingredients are fully blended and completely smooth, pour into glasses and enjoy.
Top Tips from Danika
High-speed blender: Use a blender with a lot of speed and power to pulse everything into a creamy liquid; no one wants stringy celery!
Layering the ingredients: Placing the soft food on the bottom, then adding the frozen pineapple supports the blender blade, and makes it so you need less liquid to blend well.
Use frozen pineapple: The cold pineapple makes this smoothie a thicker texture, and being cold makes it so refreshing!
Add more celery: Start with one stalk of celery, blend, then taste. Add more as desired. Some celery can taste more intense (darker green will be stronger) than others, so it's better to start with one stalk and add 1 or 2 more slowly.
Celery Pineapple Smoothie FAQs
Yes, celery leaves are edible and can be used in a smoothie! Fun fact: celery is a relative of parsley, which does have a similar flat leaf, but it doesn't taste like it.
When making a smoothie with celery, here are some ingredients that go well: apples, pears, lemon juice, lime juice, fresh ginger, coconut, leafy greens, berries, tropical fruit or pineapple juice, cucumber juice, fresh orange juice, and almond milk.
Limp celery is often just dehydrated. Try giving it a bath in cold water (10-30 minutes) and see if it becomes crispier. If there are no other signs of spoilage (other than being limp), this celery is fine to eat.
To prevent celery from going limp, store cut celery stalks in a jar or container covered with water and place in the fridge. For celery to last 4 weeks or longer, wrap it in tin foil and store it in the fridge. This traps the moisture inside, keeping it crispy.
