Mango Slushie (electrolyte drink recipe)

A healthy mango slushie made without refined sugar or dyes. This is made with ingredients that are high in minerals that will give your body a recharge like coconut water, mango, and sea salt - it's an electrolyte drink. It's refreshing and made with 5 simple ingredients in under 5 minutes.

This is my go-to on-repeat replenishing drink for summer days, after a run, or when I'm just feeling a bit sluggish (along with these protein bars). My kids love it too, especially because it's neon yellow.

TL;DR

Use quality coconut water (something without sugar added) and blend it in a high-power blender with frozen mango, fresh mint, sea salt, and honey.

The ratio is 1.5 cups of liquid to 2 cups of frozen fruit to get the right icy texture.

  • Time: 5 Minutes
  • Equipment you can't make this without: A good blender.
  • Servings: 2

Ingredients and nutritional insights from Danika

I studied nutrition for 2 years, and I love designing recipes to support the body. Here are my insights on why I've chosen each ingredient for this slushie.

Coconut water, sea salt, frozen mango, fresh mint, and honey on the counter for a electrolyte slushie.
  • Coconut water: If you are lucky enough to live in a place where coconuts grow, crack it open and use that fresh water (that's what I did on holidays in Belize earlier this year)! If you are like me, living in landlocked North America with not a tropical tree in sight, then luckily, even small-town grocery stores sell coconut water these days! Look for something that is 100% coconut water and does not have any additives or preservatives (without sugar), the best ones have no other ingredients.
  • Frozen mango: Using mango that is frozen mango is key to getting a good icy texture in this slushie. I like using frozen fruit instead of ice, as it still stays thick as it melts instead of becoming watery! Mango is a great source of vitamin C and A, which support immunity, and help absorb minerals. I haven't tested this recipe with fresh mango instead of frozen mango, but I would try adding 1.5 cups of ice to the recipe if using fresh mango and add more ice after blending if needed.
  • Honey: Look for raw honey, as that means it is not heated, keeping more minerals and vitamins intact, which is key when wanting to replenish electrolytes. You can often find it at farmers' markets or the small local grocery stores.
  • Mint: Fresh mint is like a weed once you get it started in your garden, but if it's not growing season, the grocery store should have a lovely bundle for a $1-$2. The mint makes the mango drink turn almost lime green. If you only have dried mint, don't use that; it's not a good alternative to fresh mint in this recipe.
  • Sea salt: Please pay attention to the sea part of sea salt. It's not just regular table salt we need in this recipe. The reason we add it to this slush is that it contains small amounts of minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium, and it's much less processed than table salt. The sea salt is going to help the body stay hydrated by retaining water and replacing the sodium lost from being active. You could skip the salt and add your favorite electrolyte powder if you prefer.

Other mango recipes I highly recommend trying

I'm a huge fan of mangos, and so excited when they are in season and finally come to my Canadian grocery stores! Since they are so seasonal, I always have frozen mango in my freezer, and I love to make mango smoothies or these mango peach popsicles in the summer!
